I don't think the post is focusing on how to eliminate caves... but rather the immense time cost of doing so...

It takes me about 5 or 6 hours to eliminate most of the larger caves on a standard map as long as there are people in the area for an hour or so, so that the caves fill up. The gigantic tunnel system they are using is insane, and with the new F3 "see-mobs" tactic, it's far easier. It's not 100% reliable with a mob grinder running in the area.

Or you could build your trap in a region with very few caves. Caves tend to cluster together, and so there will be highly porous regions as well as relatively solid ones.

If there are any cave entrances near the surface where you are, don't build your trap there. It would also be a good idea I think to take a page from Kiershar's book and build your trap under the sea. No surface to worry about, and less room for caves.

I'd just use stone vision and F3 to make sure there were not many caves.
