Redstone input/output list! Empty
PostSubject: Redstone input/output list!   Redstone input/output list! EmptyWed May 11, 2011 9:13 pm

Inputs:

Pressure plate/tracks: One of the simplest inputs, can be used in many ways. Stone plates only trigger on living creatures, wooden plates activate on collision with any entity. Wooden plates in particular are nifty for other compound inputs. Pressure tracks only detect minecarts, and ONLY minecarts. Supplies power to 2 blocks below the pressure plate, and to all orthogonally adjacent blocks, except up.

Button: Activates redstone for a short while, then turns off. Not very many ways to use this.

Redstone torch: When placed upright, gives power 1 and 2 blocks up, and 1 block left, right, forward and backward. When placed on the side of a block, it gives power 1-2 blocks up, and 1 block down, and power to all orthogonal directions for 1 block except to the block that it is placed on. Can be turned off with redstone power to the block it's placed on. Also can be washed off. Can be used to make logic gates.

Lever: Like a redstone torch, but instead sends power to the block behind it. Also can be used for direct input, or can be washed off with water.

Complex inputs

Block detector: Repeaters can give power through 1 block, but not through air. Using this, one can have the machine detect blocks falling, blocks being placed, or the presence of magma/water (using an opposite source near the block detector)!

Arrow switch: Using a painting, and a wooden pressure plate, one can have the painting fall directly on the pressure plate after the painting is hit with the arrow. Not 100% reliable, but works most of the time.

Water detector: Ethos is a pretty kewl gai.

Random cactus output: eh invents new stuff and doesn't afraid of anything.

Outputs Note: Most of these will be powered if you charge the block they're placed on!

Door: Opens, closes. Can be used as an arrow gate, a platform, or a wall.

Liquids: Liquids head for the nearest depression, and only update when any block next to them updates. Using this, one can put water next to a hole, place wire next to the liquid, and dig a hole where you want the liquid to go. Then, when the liquid updates due to the adjacent wire, it will flow into the other hole as well. Needs to be manually reset.

Dispenser: Shoots arrows, hatches eggs, drops items. Ofc, requires an inventory.

Redstone torch: Used for delay, display, and power inversion. Can also be used to "hack" wires.

Redstone: ORLY. Keep in mind to actually wire this to the output, and not have it simply flow by the destination.

Redstone repeater: These repeat the current, allowing it to flow another 15 blocks. Can also be used for a "block detector", as mentioned above.

TNT: KABOOM! Can be used for cannons, or automated mining, though the latter is unpreferrable. Also, kills players and mobs extremely effectively. Can be used to open a pit. Requires a reset, of course.

Falling blocks: If you place sand on a torch, and a liquid breaks it, the sand will fall. Can also use signs, put the base sign on a sand block that will fall from water. Reset Required.

Minecart tracks: Left or right? Your choice!

Booster Tracks: Can be used to stop rogue minecarts. Or can be used to deploy a cart, too.

Note blocks: They make noise! Can be hit to change the note. Doors are much louder, and therefore function better as an alert system, but these can make different sounds that play whenever a different event happens.

Logic gates: Here they are!

Note on emitting blocks: These are blocks directly above a RS torch, next to a repeater, or directly below a pressure plate. When non-transparent blocks are powered in the manners described, they will act as a power source, making wire/outputs directly next to the emitter become powered.

Requests for adding other entries are welcome!

On your list of outputs, I think you forgot Note-Blocks.

Some clarification: Blocks that are above torches, in front of Repeaters, or anchoring buttons/levers/pressure-plates all act as "emitters". Redstone wire adjacent to an emitter will become powered. This is why redstone wiring 2 blocks below a pressure-plate will receive signals from the plate despite there being a block of solid stone between them. That block, far from being an insulator, is actually emitting redstone charge to all adjacent blocks capable of receiving it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't

->RB
BBB->

Not work? Where -> is wire, R is a repeater, and B are blocks.

Correct, that will not work.

Blocks which are "emitters" will only charge wires that are adjacent to them, but will not charge adjacent blocks. Wires "listen" to see if they are next to a source of charge, and if so, will conduct that charge. Blocks will only be charged if a wire is pointing directly at it, wire is on top of it, or if the block is turned into an emitter by sitting on top of a Torch or being the target of a Repeater.

Is this more clear? I've been thinking of making a video about this, since it deals with the fundamental principles of how to go about miniaturizing redstone mechanisms.

Then explain why pressure plates set up like this DO work.

P
B
R

I assume this is a special case. The current will also go to the orthogonal sides of the block the plate rests on. In this case, is the block not actually an "emitter"?

I think we have a misunderstanding, as this is not a special case. This is normal behavior explained/predicted by my theory. The Redstone underneath the Block that the Plate is on will receive power, because the anchor-Block acts as an "emitter".

The misunderstanding I think may lie in some confusion over what I mean by "emitter" and what it does. An "Emitter" is a block which will power redstone which is adjacent to it, above it, or below it. An "Emitter" will not however cause another Block to receive power. A torch anchored to a block adjacent to an emitter will be unaffacted by it.

I'll make myself a crude example of this!

P
B B /
R

P= Pressure Plate
B = Block
/ = Torch
R = Redstone wire

The wire receives power, but the torch will remain on. The block that the Plate is sitting on is acting as an "emitter" and so will power nearby wire, however, it has no effect on the solid block that it is next to.

...Am I conveying my point any better?

I think some sort of special case is used for pressure, plates, because in the setup where the repeater gives power to a block above redstone, the redstone below the block isn't powered. Yes, I understand that emitting blocks don't give power through blocks.

Here is a setup where a Repeater, powered by a Torch on its left, puts power into a Block on its right. Underneath the powered Block, there is a line of redstone Dust.

/ R B
B D D

/ = Torch, R = Repeater, B = Block, D = redstone Dust

Based on my experience, the Dust beneath the Block will be powered. This is actually one of the cases that led me to develop the "Emitter Theory" for blocks that seem to transmit power.

I wish we had minecraft-block smilies on this forum.

Redstone input/output list! 28s7itc

Sorry Lemur, it appears I have dumbed. I thought the best way to clear this confusion of perspective was to show a real picture, and it seems that your theory is 101% correct, +- 1%. Yeah, I'd say your emitter theory is very sound!
