NOTE:THIS IS THE SURVIVAL OF THE PLAYER, NO FOOD, ON NORMAL DIFFICULTY
I have collected the data, and the results are astounding! Leather armor survived almost twice as long as nothing, and diamond survived more than three times as long! Iron came rather close to diamond, too. Here are the times you've been waiting for:
None: 7 seconds
Leather: 12 seconds
Gold: 14 seconds
Chainmail: 13 seconds
Iron: 20 seconds
Diamond: 23.5 seconds
Keep in mind these times are off by a margin of human error, but it still shows the effect of armor. Even humble leather scored a decent amount. In fact, a fresh set of leather armor will protect you from sky level to sea level falls! (64 blocks)
Now someone just needs to find the height survivability of various types of armor...
In other news, cactus will still grow while you stand on it. Here's a pic:

Happy experimenting!

I assumed that Diamond would have a longer duration than shown. It seems to be a tinsy bit stronger than Iron, so you might aswell just stay with that.

Nevertheless. What you've taken from your text Is very valuable information. Good job. This will help me Smile

Note that all my armor survived longer than I did, sorry I didn't mention that. But I guess you saw the pants that flew over the fence, so that should have shown you that effect.

In that case they should have god mode on difficultys. being undamaged from everything would be brilliant for testing out armor durations better.

Perhaps I should use peaceful + gold apples to test this. Will post revised results soon! (Thanks Pancakelover)

Anytime! (I really don't know what I did. Maybe the words god mode made you think of how godly a golden apple is?)

True. But I wouldn't class it as god mode

Not that it matters. As long as the results have a slight change thats good :]

NOTE: THESE RESULTS ARE FOR THE SURVIVAL OF THE ARMOR, NOT THE PLAYER
OK, at pancakelover's request, I have done the experiment on peaceful with golden apples. The results seem exponential. Here they are:
Leather:16 seconds on a cactus
Gold:31 seconds on a cactus
Chain:31 seconds on cactus
Iron:63 seconds on cactus
Diamond:126 seconds on cactus
As you can see, the equation to find armor duration is about (2^n)-1. There are a few points a little off, but it looks like that was more human error. Happy testing!

Chain mail is armor obtainable only through hacking. It appears to work as well as gold armor, as you can see.

Interesting the diamond only lasted 3 seconds longer than the iron. So iron is more economical?

Chain mail is only as good as gold armor, anyways, so that really doesn't matter. It just wouldn't be practical to get all those golden apples and other sets of armor. This experiment would not have happened on a legit save, collecting the materials would take way too long.
@elite:this was without food, the player's survival time was measured here. Iron is more practical if you lack food, but diamond lasts twice as long if you have the food to spare.

This needs to be refined more. This shows how much the armour protectecs you from cactus. We need to know how much full armour protects you, and how quickly armour degrades.

I'll try to test durability of armor in magma, fire, and water, and see what heights are lethal with different armors. I'll try to post the results within a day or two. If you could tell me another source of damage-over-time, that would be appreciated. Have fun experimenting!

Thank you for doing this research, but it's proper practice not to go straight to the conclusions forum with your results until they are validated by a sizeable number of people.

You didn't really describe what you did... or how you did it... only listed numbers... What are the numbers?

and I'm really confused as to what the second set of numbers mean...

but hopefully after you explain everything it will make more sense!

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused, I didn't know how the proper procedure for the experimenting. What I saw on the guidelines for experiments/conclusions was "yup", which didn't tell me much of how it was supposed to go. Perhaps you could put those guidelines in the sticky of each respective thread? What I did was equip various sets of armor (leather, gold, iron, diamond) and jump on a cactus. For the first set of numbers, I timed how long the minecrafter survived on the cactus on normal with different kinds of armor without food in seconds. The second set of numbers showed how long the armor itself survived the cactus treatment. For armor stress test I used invedit to get a 255 stack of gold apples and switched to peaceful, and timed how long it took for all the armor equipped to break. Obelisk wanted me to run a few trials for other hazards, so here are the results of those trials (these are for how long the armor survived) I removed the values of chainmail, as it won't appear in normal gameplay and appears to share the same values as gold does.

Cactus:
Leather armor survived for 17 seconds
Gold armor survived for 31 seconds
Iron survived for 63 seconds
Diamond survived for 126 seconds

In Magma:
Leather armor survived for 5 seconds
Gold armor survived for 8 seconds
Iron armor survived for 14 seconds
Diamond armor survived for 28 seconds

Drowning:
Leather armor survived for 25 seconds
Gold armor survived for 49 seconds
Iron armor survived for 97 seconds
Diamond armor survived for 193 seconds

In a Fire:
Leather armor survived for 17 seconds
Gold armor survived for 32 seconds
Iron armor survived for 64 seconds
Diamond armor survived for 127 seconds

Suffocation:
Leather armor survived for 17 seconds
Gold armor survived for 32 seconds
Iron armor survived for 64 seconds
Diamond armor survived for 127 seconds

Fire, suffocation, and cacti seem to damage the armor at a similar rate, while magma destroys the armor (and you) very quickly. Drowning seems to be the slowest source of repeated damage. Keep in mind that I myself am also vulnerable to human error. Here is the test site:
Armor Protection Research Complete! 2010-111
I hope this helps everyone comprehend this! Again, I am sorry for any confusion I may have sowed.

LOL. I forgot to post up the guidelines. My fault... I'm a jerk XD

The data is good by me.

But... standing on a cactus in peaceful with a stack of golden apples... is probably not an accurate way to measure armour strength because I think armour takes more damage on higher difficulties.

I'll test the cactus again on the three non-peaceful difficulties, and report the results later. If the results change, then we know armor takes damage at different speeds on different difficulties. I'll still have to use gold apples though, I'll die before the armor does without them.

That would be VERY difficult to measure. I don't think I can do that, obolisk. Sorry.

This is actually something I've been wondering about, although I personally do not like the approach taken in this testing. While it may show the effectiveness of armor against cactus, it really doesn't give you an idea of how effective armor is in combat.

Here's what I suggest...

Weapon/Armor Wood / Gold / Stone / Iron / Diamond/Bow
X
Leather (hits)/ (hits)/ (hits)/ (hits)/ (hits) / (hits)
Gold
Iron
Diamond

Make a chart of how many hits it takes to kill a player using each weapon while they are wearing each level of armor.

First, you must test whether or not separate body parts take different amounts of damage...then, for bonus science, do so with every possible combination of Headpiece/Chestplate/Leggings/Grieves

Wouldn't be difficult to test. Just time consuming. In fact, I may start doing this with Val when we have some spare time.
